Description

10 year Cellar Aged release.

Aristea is only made when vintage conditions are perfect, and the fruit produced is of the highest quality. We set out to make Aristea at the start of every season, however given vintage conditions over the last 10 vintages, we’ve been able to make only three.

Handpicked parcels of shiraz showing the most intense flavours and complexity go into this wine. 30% whole bunch pressed, fermented then aged in 100% French oak (50% of which is new) for 14 months. Normally aged in bottle for up to five years before initial release, this cellar aged release has been slowly maturing at Glenguin since being bottled in 2008.

Simply put, this wine is phenomenal. At 10 years of age, it is still showing amazingly deep fruit characters – black cherry and blood plum, augmented by hints of spice and truffle. Secondary characters are just starting to come through as well – hints of leather, game and cigar box – but in such a light way that you’d be forgiven in thinking this was only a youngster. If you look for it, there are hints in the colour that indicate age – but you have to look for it, with slight hints at the edges, such is its youthful exuberance. An extraordinary wine showing some classic Hunter flavours with every chance that this wine has at least another 20 years left in it – with careful cellaring it could go on for a lot longer. Decant before serving.

Strictly limited quantities.

“Confidently holding its bright colour and equally confidently all its quality markers since first tasted three years ago, my tasting note effectively unchanged.” 95 points, to 2037, 2017 James Halliday Wine Companion

“Sweet start then very fresh and grainy-textured. This is pure Hunter Valley Shiraz of the old school, with what I used to call ‘volcanic twang’ in a reference to its suggestion of pungent warm earthiness. There is massive character in this wine. Super freshness too. Great integrity.” Jancis Robinson
